About the Author

Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd (1888-1957) was an international hero best known for his accomplishments in pioneer aviation and polar exploration. Recipient of the U.S. Congressional Medal of Honor for navigating the first flight over the North Pole in 1926, he also was honored for his 1927 trans-Atlantic flight. In subsequent expeditions to the South Pole he discovered new land and collected important scientific data. His books Little America and Skyward, both straightforward accounts of his polar expeditions, were followed by Alone in 1938. Byrd wrote Alone in response to requests from people all over the world wanting to know the true story behind his ordeal.

In 1934, Admiral Richard Byrd took residence in a shack in the South Pole's interior to monitor the harsh weather and active auroras throughout the long, dark winter. Initially, the operation was going to use three men, each having their own jobs throughout the 6 month period, but due to the tiny size of the shack, Byrd thought it would be detrimental to relationships and decided to go it alone. He thought the time alone would be good for reflection, reading and listening to music. Although it seems comical that soon after his his crew deserts him, his biggest troubles are that he cannot find two very important articles: his alarm clock and his cookbook. However, the Admiral had bigger fish to fry than making perfect pancakes in the 60 below temperatures with the cold and dark.Admiral Byrd had guessed that something may be amiss with his stove. As several pieces of pipe were lost in transit, they used makeshift pieces made of paint cans to put the stove and pipe together. This was the Admiral's only heat source. His shack had a trapdoor to the snowy landscape above and a side door which lead into snow/ice tunnels where he stored his food, equipment and fuel. Since he gathered it possible that toxic fumes could be leaking into his shack, he would sleep with the stove off and the door open during the night. In the morning he would struggle into his frozen clothing, start the stove and begin the day. Often times his equipment would be frozen, and his antenaes above frozen with a thick crust of ice. His ventilation pipes also froze and gathered large chunks of ice inside which had to be scraped away. This is a very harrowing story. Richard Byrd penned -Alone- several years after his antarctic stay and used his diary and memory to honestly account his experiences. There is beauty, pain, happiness and much sorrow in his story. The bitter cold was horrible, but the beauty of the auroras breathtaking. His reflections on how little humans actually need to survive is very refreshing as he had much time to reflect on the important things in his life. In conjuction with reading this book, I watched the 1941 film, "Scott Of The Antarctic," and I found it a fascinating look at the area I was reading about. The white out conditions, frostbitten explorers in heavy woolen clothing and furs, the glacial cliffs and dangerous crevices in the movie, made the book even more stunning. Byrd mentions many explorers and ill-fated expeditions in this book.I highly recommend this book as a testament to the great explorers of the Antarctic and to Admiral Byrd who truly did have a harrowing time. It's a great and interesting read.

The book is written four years after his trip to the Antarctic but he remembers it vividly and includes many notes from his diary during that time. I love reading books from long ago because of the verbage they use. It is very old world and really makes you ponder on how language has changed. That being said, it is a very easy read. Admiral Byrd has more fortitude than I probably ever will. His fine balance between running the stove which was poisoning him with carbon monoxide and leaving it off while trying to survive the cold was very heart wrenching. It really makes you feel for the guy. His description of the interior walls of the cabin slowly becoming more and more encased in ice each day was bone chilling. I read this book in Texas in the middle of summer and I swear I got cold every time I started to read it. There is a small amount of mundane jargon in the book that is scientific based like weather observations and readings but this is his sole purpose for the trip so I don't feel it detracts much from the story despite it's repetitiveness.

I have been interested in polar exploration for a while now. Can't say why. Truth be told, I doubt if I would last 10 minutes in these conditions. When I learned about this book from the forward of Dan Simmon's The Abominable, I had to pause that book for a while to pick up this one.If you are interested in what would drive a man to seek out the solitude and extreme conditions of a solo polar expedition, then you will find this book fascinating. There is a nice balance of day-to-day struggle and introspection. At one point Byrd wishes he did not have radio contact with his base, as it might allow too much of the outside world to seep in. The afteward, written some years later, adds nicely to the history of exploration in that era.In addition, perhaps because of the era in which it was written, the writing style is at times slightly more formal than you expect today, in a pleasing way. It reminded me of watching an old movie. It has a classic feel about it.

In the Antarctic winter of 1933, famed explorer Richard E. Byrd and members of his expedition constructed a weather station on the Ross Ice Shelf, 123 tough miles by tractor and dog sled from their base at Little America along the coast of the frozen Ross Sea. For a variety of reasons, the original three person manning proved impractical, and Byrd decided to man the station by himself. The station, a small, primitive but rugged wooden hut partially dug into the ice, would be Byrd's home for several months.Byrd's narrative is very detailed, very personal, and absolutely entralling. His description of the experience of magnificent solitude in the vastness of the ice shelf amidst an Antarctic winter is awesome in the original sense of that overused word. But wonder turns to fear, in the face of Byrd's slowly dawning perception that he is in trouble, at mortal risk from an invisible but lethal opponent. The intrepid explorer will face a crisis of conscience over whether to call for help, and his men to risk their own lives in a rescue attempt."Alone" was first published in 1938, and has remained in print ever since. It is a classic of polar exploration, and a gripping narrative of one man's struggle to survive. It is very highly recommended, even in used condition, to the general reader and the student of the polar regions.

Before Buddha Was Buddha: Learning from the Jataka Tales, by Rafe Martin

Review

“Storyteller and Zen teacher, Rafe Martin, offers a fresh set of stories to contemplate – and what stories they are! These amazing old tales enter the heart directly and prepare our minds for the wisdom of the author’s contemporary commentary. His deeply felt connection to these ancient Buddhist tales enhances his message to all of us, and integrates traditional teachings with our lives today. Before Buddha Was Buddha is a pleasure to read. Plus a close reading reveals not only wise teachings but also valuable insights into ancient metaphors and symbols.” (Pat Enkyo O’Hara Roshi, Abbot of the Village Zendo NYC, Founding Teacher of the Zen Peacemaker Family)“Before Buddha Was Buddha is a most welcome addition to contemporary Zen Tradition – Zen in the Art of the Jatakas! It offers us a source of inspiration and courage when we must face the “slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,” seeing them not as interruptions or obstacles, but as the Way itself. With this book, Rafe Martin has made it possible for us to go directly to the Big Boss, (the Buddha himself), before his supreme awakening, and learn how he, too, struggled to find his way when he was swamped by the “the thousand natural shocks that flesh is heir to.” An excellent and most useful book!" (Danan Henry Roshi, Founding Teacher, Zen Center of Denver)"Before Buddha Was Buddha is clearly the result of decades of practice and insight. Written by a very mature teacher, it can help spiritual practitioners deepen their understanding of the nature of Mind. As a lifelong student of Zen Buddhism, I am personally impressed and inspired by it!" (Hogen Bays Roshi, Co-Abbot Great Vow Zen Monastery and Heart of Wisdom Zen Temple Portland, Oregon)“As a teacher of Eastern philosophy to diverse students, I’ve struggled with how to present the abstract, challenging, and sometimes counter-intuitive concepts that Buddhism presents in a way that brings them to life in a classroom. Karma, impermanence, dependent co-arising and the rest, can feel colorless without narratives to ground them. Rafe Martin’s illuminating, thoughtful, and inspiring new book on the wisdom of the ancient Jataka tales does just that: reveals how the core ideas of Buddhism actually play out in the realities of our lives. This is just the book my students need to put flesh on the Buddhist bones. I recommend it enthusiastically!” (Dr. Abigail Levin, Associate Professor of Philosophy, Niagara University)"This is a delightful book—read it for the stories as well as the gift of life it presents. Rafe Martin reveals a way of play as well as fully exploring the deepest corners of our human hearts."  (James Ishmael Ford, author of Introduction to Zen Koans)“The Long Maturation, in which we align our behavior, speech and thought with what we realize in our ongoing Zen practice, is a vital yet so often ignored aspect of that practice. With Before Buddha Was Buddha, Rafe Martín Sensei gives us rare and valuable guidance in this process, using the examples of the Buddha’s previous lives as told through the Jataka Tales. An important book for anyone doing spiritual training!”   (Mitra Bishop Roshi, founding teacher of Mountain Gate-Sanmonji)"Before Buddha Was Buddha is an alarm clock for the soul. Its words wake you up and lead you out into bright daylight. Its clarity and maturity brings Buddhism down from the realm of the gods and makes the profundity of this Path an actual lived reality. Thank you so much!" (Richard Wehrman, poet, artist, author of Talking To The Wind and Light Was Everywhere)“Rafe Martin offers a book that exactly meets the needs of modern Buddhist practitioners. Zen Master Dogen wrote that the enlightened ones of the past were like us and we will, in the future, be like them. But what were they like? With this book, Sensei Martin shows us that even the most supremely enlightened being, the Buddha himself, had difficult moments in former lives. He felt anger, loss of faith in himself, fear, lust. He made errors and lacked courage. He was, in other words, human—just like us. But he also had tremendous resilience, and a determination to keep practicing through whatever hardship and pain might come his way.  This is deeply affirming of our own humanity and is also something we desperately need to hear in these trying times. Whether you are a Buddhist or not, Before Buddha Was Buddha is an uplifting, important book.”   (Sunyana Graef Roshi, founding teacher and spiritual director of Vermont Zen Center, as well as spiritual director of Casa Zen, Costa Rica.)“Compelling, charming, and often surprising, the gem-like stories found in Before Buddha Was Buddha: Learning from the Jataka Tales, alongside Rafe Martin’s excellent commentary, offer a welcome window into the teaching of Buddhism and the oral tradition that shaped it over many centuries.  A valuable resource for anyone seeking a deeper understanding.” (Dinty W. Moore, author of The Mindful Writer)"Those who thought the jatakas were just morality tales for another age should, given Before Buddha Was Buddha, take a fresh look. Rafe Martin draws upon his insight, his knowledge of the jatakas, and his long immersion in the Dharma to create, through these stories and commentaries, vivid constellations we can use to navigate our own dark times." (Bodhin Kjolhede Roshi, Abbot and Spiritual Director, Rochester Zen Center)

This book just arrived and I'm already halfway through - and enthralled! Rafe Martin is a master storyteller (truly - he's received numerous awards and accolades for his oral storytelling) and a well-seasoned hand in Zen practice. Now a Zen teacher, Rafe brings his insight and compassionate outlook to an explanation of these ancient stories (Jataka Tales) of the Buddha in his prior lifetimes (as "The Bodhisattva") - making them clear and pertinent to practitioners (like me) in the 21st Century West.Rafe, uniquely, has led numerous "Jataka sesshins" where he has delivered a daily dharma talk on any one of these several hundred Tales in the Buddhist canon. His interest in these stories is decades-old, and his grasp of the many essential teaching points is inspiring. Easy to read (I'm starting to read the book aloud with a friend) and fun to explore, this book will be a helpful companion to anyone on a spiritual path or just trying to live a better, more human, life. Highly recommended!

I have known Rafe for over 35 years, since before he set up the Oxcart Bookstore in the 1970's. In that time I have witnessed his burgeoning fascination, involvement, and (positively meant) obsession with the Jataka Tales. The Jatakas are the stories of the Buddha "before he was Buddha," living through many lives of development, overcoming obstacles, reborn in various forms, struggling and meeting adverse circumstances. "The Buddhas and ancestors were like us; in the future we shall become Buddhas and ancestors." This is Rafe's third long-book treatment of the Jatakas. The first was The Hungry Tigress (1990); then Endless Path (2010); finally the present volume (2018). In the course of these years he received dharma transmission from Danan Henry Roshi as an independent Zen teacher in the Kapleau and Aitken branches of the Harada-Yasutani lineage. The evolution of Rafe's writing from book to book is quite notable. The Hungry Tigress was rather careful and stiff; Before Buddha Was Buddha is much more wide-ranging, confident, sensitive, deeper, and especially freer--more and more individuated. Rafe has always been a serious writer, and this gradual change in voice is certainly a manifestation of what Torei Zenji called the Long Maturation--the deepening integration and actualization of insight in daily life and work--as unmistakable as the refinement of calligraphy throughout the life of a long-lived teacher, steadily growing more skilled, natural, confident, deft, and playful.

This is an important book for Buddhist practice and a great help for practitioners. These stories show the Buddha in difficult life circumstances, not unlike our own. The Buddha, in these tales, could be blinded by the same sticky everyday habits that we have. But he also always pressed forward and that is an inspiration to us all. These stories and Rafe Martin's penetrating commentary, show us that our failings are not absolute and that grappling with them is in actuality what Buddhist practice is about. Highly recommended!

Rafe Martin does something marvelous in this short book of commentaries on 16 Jataka Tales (and 1 koan). In his lucid and colloquial prose, Martin introduces us to an extraordinarily human Bodhisattva prior to his enlightenment as the Buddha—human even when he incarnates as a deer, a quail, a monkey or a parrot. Each tale illuminates the difficulty of the path, the many setbacks he encountered, and his drive to learn from each experience until all learning was extinguished. But in doing so, Martin reveals how much our own issues are of the same substance as the Buddha’s, and how the Buddha’s path is one not that dissimilar from our own. Out of that arises a profound inspiration to continue, to practice, to fully engage in our lives. Martin’s writing is down to earth, and his commentaries illuminating, subtle and yet easy to grasp. He has brought these ancient tales to life, making them relevant to all today, whether you are Buddhist or not.

I have read many books on Buddhism, zen, religion and philosophy. This was the first book, however, that I have read on the Jataka Tales. From what I have read I would imagine that these stories would speak to different people, young and old, the neophyte and adept, those seeking and those otherwise engaged. I have found this book to be insightful and inspiring, written with perspective, clarity and depth. I hope these stories find their way to broader society, as they have clear applicability and value outside of "Buddhism".

The reviewer Hogen Bays, co-abbot of Great Vow Zen Monastery says on the back jacket, “Clearly the result of decades of practice and insight, written by a very mature teacher.” With that I would whole heartedly agree. However, it also is written by someone with the insight of, to quote a lyric from David Bowie, “An absolute beginner”. Therein lies the beauty and intimacy of this book. Rafe Martin shares these jataka tales of the Buddha’s past lives and shows us a Buddha to be beginning again and again, face to face with challenges similar to those many of us must deal with (or not) in our own lives. The tales are amazing, their relevance to us a thousand or two thousand years’ later spot on. But what helps to really bring them home is Rafe Martin’s commentary and his ability to connect these ancient yet timeless jatakas to a host of other classic and contemporary writers and events. The works of William Blake, Leonard Cohen, James Joyce, Bob Dylan and the Brothers Grimm etc. are all quoted and infuse the tales with a language that speaks from multiple sources across the ages. Quite simply; simple, profound and beautiful.

Rich, inspiring tales creatively told. Deserves to be read and re-read. For Buddhists, non-Buddhists and anyone with a glimmer of curiosity about what life's all about -- this one, the last one and the many to come.

Review

"[Apollo] continues to grow as a sympathetic narrator, his egotism and vanity slowly giving way to humility and self-sacrifice. His flashes of vulnerability, especially around the reminder of his long-departed lover Hyacinthus, are endearing . . . ."―Kirkus Reviews"Of course, this is Riordan, so there's plenty of snarky banter and comedy mixed in among the drama. Amid the cinematic pacing and well-choreographed action scenes, Riordan squeezes in plenty of character development into the expanding cast of characters, even minor ones who don't get a lot of page space. Riordan's fans will appreciate seeing some familiar faces in this puzzle-filled installment, and a cliff-hanger ending will make them eager for the sequel."―Booklist

Ok, to be completely fair, I definitely thought that The Trials of Apollo was a trilogy. Spoiler alert: it is not. So that definitely threw off where this story line went for me, because I was expecting everything to be wrapped up. Some of the events in this book made me sad, but I'm definitely waiting on pins and needles for the next one. Apollo got less annoying to me, and is becoming a much more likeable character. The reappearance of different characters from the Percy Jackson and Heroes of Olympus series is always awesome, and this book doesn't disappoint (much) in that regard. If you like the Percy Jackson series, definitely read this one!

Why is the third book in the Camp Half Blood Chronicles just so devastating!!! I mean The Titan's Curse, The Mark of Athena, and now The Burning Maze have each in their own way left me shook! Apollo and friends find themselves facing probably their toughest opponent yet. If you've yet to read this but it is on your TBR put your guards up because Rick ripped my emotions to shreds with this one. This series just continues to be action packed and hilarious. And its not one more then the other Rick has definitely found away to balance the action with the comedy. I also love how even after 13 books already published and with only 2, yes 2, more left until this series is finished I still find myself learning about one of my all time favorite mythology. Its such a treat to know that an author like Rick prides himself on his knowledge and research and funnels it into this sort of media outlet. Anyway this book, no this series is highly recommended.

Normally LOVE this author’s stuff. This one came out at just the wrong time for me I think. In my opinion, the darkness overrode the humor completely until it was lost. I also thought that the major death was diminished by the very small glimpse of the character before it happens. Or, maybe I was just already depressed anyway and when I read it again it will be better. Reading this one after just having lost my beloved Border Collie was probably not the best idea, but it’s usually safe to read a kids’ book. What ever the case, be prepared for the darkest Riordan book yet. And yes, that includes the house of Hades.

Oh, this series makes me laugh, cry and pretty much every feeling in between. It feels both dark yet light at the same time. I know there has been death in this series and Riordan's books before but this book really hurts.Yet the humor and heart is still there too. I continue to feel that this series will forever alter the characters from previous series and this series too.It feels like there's no way this ends well/happily for them but I'm continually surprised in each book. You'll find yourself just caring so much about these characters.Once again I adore this series and can't wait to see what happens next.

I am not a true-blue fan of Rick Riordan, but I applaud his work every time I read his books. The Trials of Apollo is a must-have piece, thanks to all the humor and action and conflict. But this book? It was probably the best of them all. It was wonderful and shattering and heartbreaking and hilarious all at the same time-- it's unfair that it has us weeping one moment and laughing the next! Yes, something incredibly sad happened here. I have never cried at a sad scene, book or movie. The only time a book had me crying wasn't even remotely tragic. But sure enough, this book had me in tears when I was least expecting it. I can almost guarantee you that you will be saddened by some of the events. However, you probably won't be for long, because right after you'll be laughing hysterically. The Arrow of Dodona, let me tell you, plays a RIDICULOUSLY important and slightly irritating role here. Besides being awesomely infuriating, I mean. Apollo definitely changed. He became less cocky and waaaayyyy more disturbingly sacrificial than necessary. [Insert nervous laugh] But he got over it. Kind of. Well, not really. In this book, as in the others, you reunite with some of your favorite characters. I'm actually wondering when Annabeth will show up, and more of Percy too, but I was seriously missing Leo even after reading book two. [Team Leo!] Then our friends Grover, Piper, and Jason play some parts here. Ahem. As well as the infamous Meg McCaffrey, of course, and we learn a lot more about her past. I'm looking forward to seeing Reyna and Hazel and Frank at Camp Jupiter, too! So happy reading! And don't get too distressed after reading... that.

This book has a Contents section in the front and an Index in the back making it very useful as a guide to food cures found in the Bible. There are cautionary words and testimonials throughout the book.I find the book is also educational in a Biblical sense. There is information on plants, herbs, oils etc..that are mentioned in Scripture. This book has proven beneficial to me personally with the discovery of Essiac Tea and information on Saw Palmetto. If you are looking for a guide book of natural remedies this would be a great choice! It's comprehensive and easily navigated.

Love this book--I already take many of the suggestions-ordered others I found I needed from this book and feeling better--I'm 85---standing tall, took my 35 year old granddaughter to look at a dog for her son at the apl. The gentleman who helped us thought I was her mother- her mother by the way is 60--so believe me I don't look my age and it's because of eating right, not smoking and taking most of the suggestions mentioned in this wonderful book. Plan to order a few more for by "kids" before they retire.

If I could figure out how, I would rate this book 4.5 stars, only because the title is somewhat misleading. Much is about treatment that improves conditions, but are not necessarily cures, and as much is not sourced from or referenced to the Bible/Biblical times as is. That said, there is a wealth of health information that is really helpful. I highly recommend it as a reference for good nutrition and food and supplements to support good health. This will be on my bookshelf for the rest of my life.

I absolutely LOVE this book! I am all about going the all natural route and staying as close to God's design as much as possible! This book was everything I expected and MORE. It has an awesome guide to sprouting at the end, which I am definitely going to be trying out. It has educated me and enlightened me in so many ways. I have used it to help with psoriasis for my son and my hubby's seasonal allergies! Who knew that aloe vera juice would do the trick along with garlic and parsley to help my hubby get through his allergy season so much better than normal (he is usually miserable for about 3 months of the year from August - October).

Started reading this book at a friends house and had to have my own copy of it. After several years of having health issues, lots of doctor bills and medicines that didn't seem to work completely, I took advice from a complete stranger for an herbal remedy because I was tired of the way things were going. After a few months, I started feeling better and after a while the problem went away. Since then I have been searching and reading about other "natural" cures. This book gives great information on several different "natural" cures and gives biblical reference to them. I also believe with God all things are possible. If he has given us the medicine to be healthy why not use it. Have started using a couple of the "treatments" in the book and have seen improvement there too. Pray that this works for you, as it has for me!

ABSOLUTELY TERRIFIC BOOK WITH TOTALLY BIBLICAL PROOF THAT GOD WAS, BEFORE BIG PHARMA / HERMES WERE!DIETS, RECIPES, ACTUAL PROOF / PEOPLE CURED FROM ALL SORTS OF CHRONIC DISEASES WHICH DOCTORS SAID THEY HAD NO HOPE; TO GO HOME AND DIE!ALOE VERA JUICE, WHEAT GRASS JUICE, SARDINES, COCONUT OIL, COD LIVER OIL... JUST A FEW. AWESOME!

I enjoyed it so much I purchased several more for gifts and they all loved it too. It's the kind of book you keep handy-a real conversation piece. I highly recommend it.

I like the information put in this book and I totally buy into the idea that the Bible has all the information we need, but this book seldom refers you to the source, or scripture of the information presented.

Very well researched information on medical solutions from times past that are mentioned in Bible. I've learned that during the times of the Old and New Testaments - there was a surprising amount of healing knowledge used by the peoples of these regions. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Natural Herbal medicines as a complimenting source of healing options. And Yes - I am using some of the medications mentioned - and so far they are helping.

The protagonists of this delightful, young-adult, romantic comedy, Xander Bowen and Holly Aberdeen, are both 17 years old. They live in in Adelaide, the capital city of the state of South Australia, and they attend a secondary school called Maple Ridge Grammar. They are in Year Twelve (the equivalent of 12th grade or senior year in high school in the USA).After a weekend of peptalks and rehearsals with Nancy Milligan, Holly's best friend for the past five years, Nancy has convinced Holly it is way past time that she proclaim her true feelings to Jason Thomas (AKA "JT"). Jason is Holly's long-time crush and best friend of ten years' duration, and Nancy has assured Holly that she is positive that Jason will reciprocate her feelings. But when Holly approaches Jason at school, bright and early Monday morning, she is stunned to encounter him hugging and kissing Nancy. Her sense of betrayal is overwhelming. Not only is she apparently the last one at school to find out that her two best friends are now a couple, but they have been together since early last weekend--a full day before Nancy began encouraging Holly to approach Jason! The sneer on Nancy's face when she catches Holly's eye makes it obvious that Nancy's intent was to cruelly set Holly up for public humiliation, basically sticking in the knife and then giving it a twist.Desperately blinking away tears, Holly pushes her way through the crowded, school halls, blindly seeking a place to be alone and cry her eyes out. When she randomly shoves open a door and plows into a half-naked, very buff male body, she suddenly realizes she's alone in the boy's locker room with none other than the "King of the Bows" AKA "King Douche." Xander Bowen is the star striker for the soccer team, and one of the two most gorgeous and popular boys at her school--Jason being the other. Each leads a clique of attractive and popular followers. Xander's followers call Jason's friends, "JT's minions," and Jason's followers call Xander's, the "Bows," The two boys are bitter enemies and, in fact, for many years, out of loyalty to Jason, Holly has taken it as a given that Xander is a worthless "manwhore" and everyone in his clique is a horrible human being as well.Holly is understandably surprised and suspicious when Xander suggests that if they pretend they are dating, both of them could achieve mutually beneficial ends. Xander is tired of girls throwing themselves at him, wasting time he needs to dedicate to soccer and his studies; Holly's pride could be saved and a mild retribution achieved by making Jason jealous, and Xander would definitely enjoy helping her stick it to that "git," Jason. At first Holly has no intention of taking up Xander on such an outrageous offer, but when Nancy brazenly taunts Holly one too many times at school, right in front of Jason, and he makes zero effort to stand up for her, Holly has had it! Revenge, even if it's the rather doubtful possibility of making Jason jealous, is too inviting to resist. And so begins the agreement that she and Xander will be indefinitely "Keeping up Appearances" that they are a couple who are mad about each other.I am a huge fan of romantic comedy novels, and sadly, there are far too few of them written for either adults or teenagers. This YA novel is a brilliant example of rom com, and the author, Elizabeth Stevens, is highly skilled at creating the best kind of comedy, based on witty repartee rather than the humiliation humor of slapstick. She also is outstanding at writing romance, utilizing the very best themes of a long tradition within adult romance novels, including: a terrific Meet Cute, no cheating, the essential romantic conflict of distrust slowly evolving to trust, a powerful personal-growth arc of both protagonists, and a happily ever after (HEA). Holly and Xander are both extremely sympathetic characters, and so are many of the subcharacters among Xander's close friends, the Bows.As a brief parental warning, I would rate this story PG-13 because there is a lot of frank talk between Xander and Holly, with a bit of semi-coarse language and multiple somewhat risqué discussions of teen-male sexual attitudes and behavior. However, there is no more sensuality between the protagonists than a few kisses. If this were an adult romance novel with sex, I would call this a "slow burn" story, because it takes most of the book before they engage in the G-rated version of sex, kissing. Also, refreshingly for the YA genre, though there is mention of underage drinking, there is none onstage. My only mild complaint is that it is not entirely clear what the geographic location of the story is, other than the use of British slang, until halfway through when the author finally mentions Adelaide. It would be nice if there had been more attention to setting by providing a bit of local color.I rate this book as follows:Heroine: 4 starsHero: 5 starsSubcharacters: 5 starsRomance Plot: 5 starsComedy: 5 starsWriting: 5 starsOverall: 5 stars

Cute, predictable YA story. Had it been better written, I would have loved it. But the writing was bad in all kinds of cliched romance-novel ways. And the author needs to learn how to paint a picture with words. All the characters did was talk or think or kiss in giant vacuums or open space. The heroine was so goregous that every guy falls all over himself for her, but she's unaware of this until the love interest tells her (He's got a bad boy reputation but is really the perfect prince charming inside). The heroine is also entirely self-centered. She never even notices that other people have lives/interests/problems. Although really the problem is bigger than this. None of the other characters actually have lives/interests/problems outside of their interactions with the heroine. The characterization was so bad that at the end of the book, I still couldn't remember who was who. Every character had a bland 1990s (US 1990s) name: Rachel, Miranda, Joshua, Teagan, Greg, Nancy, Holly, Daniel, Sabrina, Jess, Britt, Kate, Tara, Xander (and the heroine's cutsy nickname is Doll. Ugh). None of the secondary characters are given any description at all. The heroine is given a hair/eye color. The love interest is given a hot body and eye color. No one else gets anything else (including clothing... clothing can tell so much about a person). There's no descriptors at all and I never got a feel for anybody. They were just walking-talking lumps of unformed clay. (The sole exception to this was the love interests eyes which were endlessly described as 'cognac eyes.' Seriously...? How many 17 year-old girls actually know what cognac is, let alone can picture it?)The world was the same. I have no idea where on the planet this story even happened. They are in 'High School', which says US to me, but then there are all kinds of oddities that say otherwise.(boot instead of trunk, oval instead of... field?, but it did use soccer instead of football... so...). I finally googled the author and she lives in NewZealand. So perhaps there? If yes, what a waste as I would have loved to have had the story have a New Zealand feel, which it definitely did not. Of course, my friends from New Zealand are Maori or of other Pacific Islander background and I can't imagine that any of these middle-class (probably white but never stated) characters are Maori/Islanders. I finished the book still not being able to visualize a single thing about the school, the heroine's house, or the city they live in. Not a single thing. And the typos... 'To close' vs 'too close.' Endless misspelled words. Seriously, was this book even edited? (and I am not a grammar queen. I don't usually even notice this stuff.)The teens are descriptively lustful. So much so that I told the younger teens in the house not to read it as they would be horrified. I mean serious, do the heroine and love intersest have to talk about the love interest's 'p#$%s' so much?I wouldn't recommend this one and I am unlikely to get another from this author.

This book I'll admit had hardly any character development, but as I kept reading found the plot and drama to be very entertaining and just what I needed a teen drama book and that's exactly what I got. However the farther I got into the story more friendship and loyalty started in the book and in the end aside from the drama and relationships/romance there was depth to the friendships and if your a middle school-er/high school age this is good for that age group. as an adult I had to keep reminding myself it was a teen book and that was all but it had good points to the story even if it could of been shorter however I liked that there was more to it because if you read the whole thing in the right mind set you will know it was necessary in the plot and meaning of the book. So give it a shot for what its worth. I really enjoyed it and kept me well entertained at work when it was slow ;)(this review wasn't well planned out as I didn't plan to review it properly.)

Every HS story has to be complete with love, friendship, betrayal, heartbreak and a hero/heroine that makes you believe in the power of raw emotions all over again. In this case we have both a hero and heroine that break your heart as much as they make it swell. A brave girl that dared to go against the herd and stuck to who she was above what others wanted her to be and a guy that made no apologies for wanting her regardless of who was believed to be by everyone. I LOVED EVERY SECOND OF IT. The chemistry between them was off the charts and their relationship wasn't built overnight, it had depth and proper development.

I have subscribed to David Baker’s blog for some time. There’s always a good tidbit about becoming a better expert. When the “Business of Expertise” was announced, I pre ordered a copy. When this book arrived… I sat down promptly with a highlighter, pen and note pad.If you do consulting or advising and or coaching in a business environment the concepts and idea presented here can be a real game changer. It has been for me.So good, I bought two additional copies an gave to colleagues. The small investment in this book, plus the time to read and think will pay you many dividends.Order a copy now and read soon!

As a consultant, this book taught me about the importance of trading on my expertise, instead of trading in tasks, services, or deliverables. It really is the only way to get away from jobs that are solely about the execution (typically bad situations) and instead land clients for whom you can contribute to their strategy, thereby providing them with the full value of what you bring to the table.

This book was great. I love David C. Baker's way of thinking and talking about this topic. There are plenty of people out there who will say, "You need to niche, and then be the expert at what you do, and then you'll get a lot more respect," and it's absolutely true in my experience, but David has this way of talking about the subject which takes that as the point of departure, not the point of arrival, so the words that come out of his mouth (or pen) reflect a deeper level of understanding.

Real talk in a typically "b-s" filled genre of books. Simplified in a way that it makes sense across business lines. Good lessons to stay focused and get the job done.

I’d been in corporate for 10+ years and over the past year transitioned into starting my own consultancy. It’s been one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. This book has truly placed a spotlight on areas of improvement for my business. If there’s ever a playbook on how to take your consulting business to he next level, this is it.

You know those rare books. The ones you pick up and start to read, and halfway through the first chapter you KNOW that it is going to rock your understanding and beliefs around a topic? The Business of Expertise is one of those rare books. If you are in a service/knowledge-based company this is a MUST read. David lays our in clarity how we are thinking wrong about business and how that is causing us problems.I'm still working through the book, and will probably need to start back at the beginning as soon as I finish it. It is that good.

I haven't yet seen any other book that specifically tackles the issue of brand positioning as an expert. It is for real experts who have worked to earn their expertise, not overnight consultants. David Baker is very right when he says that it takes a certain courage and his book provides a lot of guidance for the journey.

You can feel the rigor of his insights. Readable and insightful. I imagine it would be quite boring to someone with a product business, but for the consultant types, this is highly relevant.

Here’s my take on Liberal Fascism by Jonah Goldberg. I have rated it four stars because it is an intriguing book filled with valuable historical information but I did not rate it five stars because of the direction Goldberg takes that information. The premise of Liberal Fascism is that conservatism (properly, classical liberalism) is defined as limited government, free markets, property rights, low taxes, etc. It is the time honored and original intent of the Founding Fathers (page 290). Anything that differs or deviates from conservatism is heresy and, therefore, undesirable (p. 4). Fascism and liberalism both differ from conservatism and are heresy; they are interchangeable (p. 7).Conservatism, on the other hand, is the party of the status quo (p. 59). Conserving the status quo should be the primary aim of government. According to Goldberg, “liberals are the aggressors in the culture wars” and it is the obligation of conservatives to defend “against the so-called forces of progress” (p. 360).American fascism began in the Progressive era and is the basis of modern fascism (p. 2). He calls it smiley-face or “nice fascism” (p. 8). It gained momentum at the hands of Pres. Woodrow Wilson and Pres. Franklin D. Roosevelt. We are living today with the fascist legacy they bequeathed us (p. 303). What makes American fascism so sinister, he says, is that the state has the right to mandate that citizens be healthy and decent and humane and good and happy whether we want to or not (p. 15, 19, 21, 23, 131). He derides “compassionate conservatism” (p. 399-401), and is unequivocal that the eight-hour workday (p. 15, 91, 95), child labor laws (p. 15, 69, 91) and universal healthcare (p. 95, 340-341) among others are all symptomatic of fascism. As for totalitarianism, it, too, is “nice” and, by definition, “holistic” (p. 14, 15). Of course, “good totalitarianism” can easily descend into bad totalitarianism, the stuff of “nightmares” which I think is the fear that Goldberg wants to instill in the reader (p. 185, 350).It seems to me that Liberal Fascism is a sort of conspiracy theory in which all shades of liberalism/progressivism are assumed to be striving to undermine or overthrow historical conservatism. By labeling beneficial government services (Social Security, Medicare, ACA, etc.) as fascist, Goldberg stigmatizes them and paints them with a conservative negative bias that is so pervasive in current Republican politics. Finally, on page 211, Goldberg describes the “fascist playbook” and unwittingly gives a perfect description of Pres. Donald Trump. He says the fascist leader utilizes: “the creation of crises, nationalistic appeals to unity, the celebration of martial values, the blurring of lines between public and private sectors, the utilization of mass media to glamorize the state and its programs, invocations of a new ‘post-partisan’ spirit that places the important decisions in the hands of experts and intellectual supermen, and a cult of personality for the national leader.”

This book is a great read and timely despite the fact it was written in 2008, almost 10 years before the rise of ANTIFA (the modern fascist group ironically calling themselves ANTIFA which is short for anti-fascists), and is more about the history of early 20th century progressive fascism than about today's fascists movements.Goldberg first details the rise of Mussolini's Fascist party and the common tactics shared by its socialists kin, Hitler's National Socialist party (the Nazis) and Stalin's Communist party. Goldberg then explains how progressives have, over the years, inaccurately (for the most part) redefined Fascism to be associated with the right despite its origins on the left. Next, Goldberg recounts some of the most Fascist administrations in American History including, President Wilson and FDR. Finally, Goldberg also impartially describes how even some people on the right have and continue to use fascist tactics, but to a much lessor degree.

Recommend this book to anyone that wants to know the history of the American Liberal! Progressivsm was a sister movement of fascism and today's liberalism is the daughter of Progressivism! From the book, Stanley G. Payne, considered by many to be the leading living scholar of fascism, wrote in 1995, "At the end of the twentieth -century fascism remains probably the vaguest of the major political terms." There are serious scholars who argue that Nazism wasn't Fascist, that fascism doesn't exit at all, or that it is primarily a secular religion (this is my own view) "Put simply." writes Gilbert Allardyce, "we have agreed to use the word without agreeing on how to define it." And yet even though scholars admit that the nature of fascism is vague, complicated, and open to wildly divergent interpretations, many modern liberals and leftists act as if they know exactly what fascism is. What's more, they see it everywhere-except when they look in the mirror! After reading this book you will know the true definition of fascism

Goldberg doesn't argue that leftists are Hitler. Rather, he cautions the reader to beware of government that seeks to fix all your problems or tells you what you must give up for the common good. For fascists, nothing is outside the state. For classical liberals (not progressives), the impulse is for more of our lives to be conducted away from the state. The same is not true of progressivism. This was a great read!

Well documented proof that fascism is and always was a monster of the left. Communism and fascism are not opposites, as the left would have us believe, but siamese twins joined at the head with a small brain of a tyrant.

One of my all time favorite books. This book did more to explain the Nazis than any history class. Read it for the history read it again to learn the lessons of not repeating history.

I read a lot, and this is one of the better non fiction books I've read. It is chalk full of facts that most people either forgot or never learned, facts which are really, really important to understand if you want some idea of what's happening in the world today. Goldberg is thorough, fair (even a little more than fair), and documents his sources as well as any texts out there. I think this book really ought to be read by all college students, probably even high school students (assuming they can still read).

One of the greatest myths of the modern age is that Fascism is a right wing philosophy. Though any honest review of history shows that this is not true, this book does an excellent job of laying out the history and the people on both sides of the Atlantic, along with the intimate connections between the American Left and the Nazis, Fascists and Communists in Europe. Well written and interesting to read. Also scary. A clear look into parts of U.S. history a lot of people want forgotten.
