Just finished this excellent exploration of how Pierre duPont created the modern versions of duPont and General Motors. He brought modern controls and financial discipline to two businesses that could have failed, but in fact prospered at his hands. If you enjoy business history, this is an excellent addition to your library. There are minor errors that are of no real consequence; the book itself is (for folks like me, who enjoy business theory and history) a page-turner. Highly recommend.For those who still lament the role of "bean counters" and accountants in modern corporations, you need to read the analysis and history in this book. While operations and line personnel are an essential part of a large business enterprise, so too are those who bring procedures, controls, statistical analysis, and cost accounting to the table. A corporation's primary business purpose is to earn a profit for the shareholders, and without the rigorous analysis and financial control that measures the enterprise's success or failure to earn an acceptable return on investment, the enterprise is just groping in the dark.
