There's no one that writes characters better than Nickolas Butler. He draws you right in and makes you care about them all. He first introduced us to Lyle in one of my favorite short stories called "Apples" from his "Beneath The Bonfire" collection. Now in "Little Faith" the story becomes Lyle and his family in a fully developed treatment.I enjoyed taking my time with this book and getting to know his wonderful characters. I've loved all of his books, and this ranks right up with his bestFaith is heavily on display and partially based on true events, Butler's prose really gets you thinking. Characters you will love and an interesting thought provoking plot coupled with his beautiful language. A great combinaton for an entertaining read.
Thank you for giving your readers another story from your heart! This book inspires us to look at the people in our lives in a different light because sometimes, what we see on the surface, isn't what's underneath. Sometimes the unlovable are easy to love, and the glib fast talker might be a phony. Set in Wisconsin in the area between where I was born and where I grew up, the truth of the story is even more unsettling and emotionally powerful. Thank you for a story that reveals a lot of faith!
Little Faith is beautifully written, capturing the essence of central WI exactly. I loved how Butler brought to life characters each on their own unique faith forming journey. From doubt and skepticism to blind faith, characters each wrestle with or approach their faith in different ways. Some of my favorite moments were the discussions between Lyle and his pastor/friend. What a stunning book club read this would make, affording the group ample topics which would lead to rich conversation.
Nick has yet another successful yarn in his menagerie of tales! Once I started I was compelled to finish it. Nick's books have always resulted in some type of learning self reflection, and Little Faith was no exception though the situation described is really a plethora of shades of gray. The characters navigate their way through the social and emotional complexities in ways that are intimately familiar to me.This isn't just a good read, you will end up learning something about yourself and what you believe by the end of it!I must have had a Wisconsin copy of the of the book with some ragweed inside as I couldn't always stop some tears (must have been allergies) from forming.I highly recommend this!
I had trouble with the first couple chapters. Some very long sentences (think William Faulkner), and the writing seemed a little simplistic. But by chapter 3 I was engaged and had a hard time putting it down. I don't live in a rural area, but my church is small, so I could relate to parts of the story that others might not. SPOILER ALERT - I did NOT like the ending. I wanted resolution to a number of things. Perhaps he has set us up for a sequel?
Filled with down-to-earth rural goodness, faith exists in this book with good beating hearts and some evil minds. And yes, faith, true faith wins.
I thoroughly enjoy this author and this book was no exception. He captures life in the Midwest and all the conflicts that often brings.
This book is amazing! People often say “so and so†sure has a way with words - well Nickolas Butler is definitely one of these people. This book is outstanding and you will love reading it! Well done Nick!
