Annoyed, because the ending of this book is different from the one I brought my sons up with. Beware, there are TWO different texts, the UK and the US versions. The US version ends on a completely anodyne note, the UK one teaches life lessons.Small asks: " What about when you're dead and gone ?" Large takes Small outside and says " See the stars, how they shine and glow ? Well some of those stars died a long time ago, but still they shine in the evening sky, because love, like starlight, never dies"I actually bought this for the children of friends who'd lost their grandparents. I wanted the correct ending !~!!
While I love this book, I was very disappointed to find that the reason I ordered it, the quote about love going on, even after death, was not in this edition. And, while I understand that some people don't want to discuss death with small children, this was the perfect answer. Children who face the loss of a grandparent or beloved relation need some answers. This beautiful explanation was missing.......
Was not informed that this was an abridged and highly edited version of the original...I read this book to my children when they were young and we got it for a friend and when I read it for old times sake saw it was changed a lot...It is not an issue to use the line "But what about when you are dead and gone? Will you love me then does love go on" That line is not there, and it actually changes the content as well as true meaning of the book, using the word "Dead" in a childrens book does not hurt the child, it actually helps them to grow and understand the entire cycle of life...very upset at the editing!
This is the AMERICAN version of the book and is NOT about death. If you’re looking to get the version about dealing with death/loss, make sure you get the original version.Instead, it is about loving people through thick and thin as well as being reassuring that love stays with you no matter how far away you are from someone.I bought this as a gift for my friend and his child. I still have my original book from childhood (I even have a tattoo with themes from the book). It is a beautiful book and great for kids who might be dealing with being long distance from their loved ones.“Look up at the starts, they’re far far away but their light reaches us at the end of each day. It’s like this with love, we may be close we may be far, but our love still surrounds us wherever we areâ€
I bought this book when my daughter was very young and it was a staple of our night time routine. She is now 12 and once in a great while she will ask if dad will read it to her and we have great fun reading it together with silly voices. As a Christian father it has always been important to me to let her know that I will always love her no matter what. I have told her that I may not always agree or approve of the choices she makes but I will always love her. This book puts that message in a very succinct yet whimsical way.
This book was beyond perfect! Not only were the pictures lovely, but the words hit home beautifully. At first I didn't like that the names were Little Small and Large... But the more I read it to my son, the more I realized it's Wonderful... Because so many parents are deployed, passed on, or not around. This book is amazing for helping bring home some big concepts about love to help reassure them that, no matter what, they will always be loved.
One of the best infant/toddler age books I have seen. Very warm-hearted and honest, with a pleasant rhyme, and easy to repeat over and over again to your little one. It's a bedtime story about a parent reassuring an unsure/grumpy child as he/she asks successive "what ifs" testing the strength of his parents' love. The illustrations are endearing and warm, and with some good humor. The story hints on some big topics like separation, and potentially even loss of a close one, in a very gentle and subtle way that I thought was very well done.
Every kid needs this book. I read this book, along with a few other select faves, to my kids when they were little and then as they grew they read it to me. Almost 20 years later (I still have our original book) I see it and know I have to buy it for my new great-nieces and great-nephews (and their moms) so they can experience the same joys. Don't forget to get "Owen" by Kevin Henkes, "Mrs. Toggle's Zipper" by Robin Pulver, "Love You Forever" by Robert Munsch, and "Goodnight Moon" by Margaret Wise Brown. These are the books my (adult-size) kids remember the best :) When the time comes (many years from now ;) ) I will buy these books again for my grandkids!
