This is a fabulous sports romance. Cole "Big Dawg" Hunter is the centerfielder for a MLB team. He and 5 of his friends comprise "The Belltown Six Pack", 6 young men who were from Belltown and attended the same local college. All were drafted to play professional baseball. This book also features a young woman named Harlow Ember who lives in Belltown and attended the same college. Harlow is a journalist for their alma mater and local newspaper. While she and Cole have known each other for years, neither is aware of the other one's interest. In fact, both are sure that the opposite is true. Harlow is assigned by the newspaper to run stories on the Belltown Six Pack to boost the ratings. Her job with the college also benefits from the publicity of the Six Pack.Without giving away too much of the plot, the road between Harlow and Cole is riddled with misunderstanding, jealousy, insecurity, fame, wealth, as well as physical distance. But never fear! A HEA ending is in their future.
The first book in the series was a cute story, that was engaging; so after reading that one, I was looking forward to this one. It was okay, but the female lead was painful at times. I was rooting for Cole to find someone else. She was difficult to like and seemed to have a major personality shift half way through the book, and each event seemed like dumb contrived drama. Hitching the Pitcher was darling, and this was a meh.
Cole "Big Dawg" Hunter is enjoying life in the big leagues--he loves the game and all that comes with it--the fast cars, the fans, and the attention. Harlow Ember has been burned by an athlete in the past, and she knows her attraction to Cole is dangerous. But as a reporter who has been assigned to cover his career, as well as that of rest of the Belltown Six, who were all drafted from Belltown in the same year, Harlow can't exactly avoid him. And the more she spends time with him, the more confused she gets. While he has his obnoxious moments, lapping up the attention from beautiful women, he also has really sweet aspects, like his concern for kids in foster care and his support of women's rights. He's also totally hot, and while Harlow knows she's attracted, she doesn't know if she can trust him. Cole knows Harlow is different from other women--and he knows he feels differently about her than he ever has about anyone, but he doesn't know how to win her over, especially when the owner of his team is pushing him away from Harlow.I really liked the chemistry between Cole and Harlow, and I think the author did a good job showing the competing facets of Cole's personality, which made him both endearing and annoying. I could feel myself right there with Harlow being aggravated by him when he'd do something boneheaded right after doing something sweet. I think it would be tough to write a character like Cole, but Sophia Summers pulled it off, because as frustrating as he could be, I couldn't help wanting him to get it together and be able to win Harlow's heart (whereas if he hadn't been well-written, I would have just wanted Harlow to move on and find someone else). Harlow was also well-written; she totally reminds me of people I know (myself about 15 years ago among them), being drawn in by someone she cares for but can't totally trust, both because of his own actions and because of how she's been treated in the past. I thought she was very realistically written. I also really enjoyed when she would heckle Cole and give him a little bit of a hard time.Although this is the second book in a series, each book is a stand-alone, so you don't have to read them in order. I'm looking forward to the next Belltown book!I read an ARC provided by the author/publisher. All opinions are my own.
I don't know how I got involved with a bunch of sports romance books, but I am enjoying them. I immediately got pulled into the story and read until I was done.It does bug me how the trend for the conflict between the H and h these days seems to stem from judging people and jumping to conclusions based on past bad experiences. It's rare to find characters with open and honest communication that avoid such misunderstandings. But I do love the camaraderie and family love between the Six Pack, and the way they include and protect the women the guys fall for.If you're looking for a clean romance with some actual issues thrown in — foster care, women's issues, reverse sexual harassment — along with witty dialogue and an epic heckling scene, you'll enjoy this book.I was given an advance Kindle copy before all the proofing was done, so there was still a bit of editing to do, but I did enjoy the story, and look forward to more. This is my honest opinion.
