This biography is very well written and beautifully translated. It is an interesting and full account of a strange, tortured woman who did not approve of the existence of royalty yet gladly accepted its benefits while indulging her own whims and obsessions.Elizabeth's beauty was acknowledged by the world. Her long, luxuriant hair required untold hours of care while her slender figure remained that way through an extreme regimen of dieting and exercise.She had a severe personality disorder and felt comfortable only with her Bavarian family. She loathed the Austrian court but in her obsessive way she passionately loved the Hungarian half of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. To avoid spending more time than she had to in Vienna, she traveled compulsively even though it meant that she rarely saw the Emperor and her children.One of her oddities was a strange interest in freak shows and deformities, and her strongest intellectual obsessions were a devotion to the poet Heinrich Heine and to the Greek language, in fact to all things Greek.For many years horseback riding consumed her. At her palace in Hungary, she rode in the hills compulsively for hours every day at breakneck speed, leaping obstacles fearlessly. She even became fascinated with dressage, and at the famous riding academy of Vienna she could jump a horse through three hoops.Eventually she became addicted to hunting in England and there she acquired a stable of the finest mounts. It cost a fortune to transport them together from England to Hungary and back again, but Elizabeth never did anything by halves.Her son, Crown Prince Rudolph, in one of his anonymous pamphlets, condemned aristocrats for their idle pursuits, referring specifically to "the persecution of animals" that occurred at fashionable hunts.Among her peculiarities, Elizabeth was extremely superstitious and never passed a nail or a horseshoe without picking it up. She believed, moreover, that she could commune with the dead while she was still in a waking state and that they were actually in her presence at that moment.With the mysterious death of King Ludwig of Bavaria she seemed on the verge of losing her mind and became more withdrawn, more gloomy, her interest in spiritualism even more intense. But this extremity of grief was altogether peculiar since she had not always welcomed the King's visits.She imagined that her poetry was of lasting value and she made complicated arrangements for it to be published in Switzerland sixty years after her death. Unfortunately, her poems were commonplace, of no value except to her biographers.Elizabeth was convinced that the Austrian empire would not survive the death of her husband, a melancholy conviction shared by her son. It was partly this that drove him to commit suicide, and perhaps murder, at the hunting lodge at Mayerling. Following this shock, Elizabeth increasingly withdrew from human companionship. She passed her last years in perpetual and aimless travel, longing for death and "steeped in illness and melanÂcholy".You will not find a more moving account of this tragic woman's last days or of her senseless murder than in this fine biography. In her death I believe she revealed a kind of stoic fortitude.
This was a fantastic biography of Empress Elisabeth ('Sisi'). What I liked most was how Hamann chose to organize it thematically rather than chronologically. For example, there was a chapter on Sisi's involvement with Hungarian politics, a chapter on her horse and hunting obsession, and a chapter on (of course) her strange beauty rituals. This unique format wouldn't necessarily work with every biography, but I feel like it was the right choice in this case because Sisi has become such a mythologized figure in recent years. The sorting of chapters by subject matter addressed those myths quite effectively.Hamann did incorporate the chronology of broader historical events, though. She also took an unbiased view of Sisi's life and choices, showing that while the Viennese court was a highly structured and unforgiving place, Sisi didn't make things any easier for herself with her frequent withdrawals from court and her refusal to participate in many fundamental traditions. I found the chapter on Sisi's involvement with Hungarian politics especially fascinating--I had no idea her support was so instrumental in bringing about the dual Austro-Hungarian monarchy.I would highly recommend Hamann's book to anyone interested in the real Sisi. Hamann drew on an extensive array of primary historical sources to show all sides of this remarkable woman--the good, the bad and the ugly. Hamann also provided excellent historical context and was careful to specify when a piece of information was speculation or gossip. This book was both readable and highly informative. I wish more of Hamann's works were available in translation, as I would definitely read them.I also posted this review on Goodreads.
An excellent and for the most part sympathetic portrait of a beautiful but deeply unhappy woman. How different history might have been had the right amount of sympathy and firm guidance been provided in her youth... This treatment of the Empress of Austria is an absorbing read, packed with details about the complicated mess that was politics in Franz Joseph's time, and is highly recommended to anyone with an interest in both the woman herself and the twilight days of an empire.
Although the style of writing is a bit dry at times, overall I liked this book because it was informative, well organized, and used competent sources. On those occasions when there were conflicting accounts of events, the author presented each one and then discussed the reasons why one account should be considered more reliable than another. The book dispels and clarifies several general assumptions concerning Empress Elisabeth. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in knowing about the details of Sisi's life and the people who had an impact on her.
A visit to Austria triggered an interest in the 19th century Austrian Empire and its players.This book relates the history of a woman who was the idolized wife of the all powerful Emperor and how to a certain degree she affected some of the changes that lead to the gradual downfall of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Her personal life and the fantasy world that became more and more a dominant feature of her life is well explained.
It is well written, no superfluous words, easy and very informative reading. At the closing of the book, one cannot help wonder what would have been the course of history, and regret all the death involved, if the hard headed emperor François Joseph had paid more attention to his wife's and son's warnings that the political thoughts were changing the course of the world irremediably.
Wonderful book, very informative and interesting, and a great price.
