Lacey Baldwin Smith was a Professor Emeritus of History at Northwestern University and had published many books on the Tudor era. The recipient of MA and PhD degrees from Princeton University, he had been a Fulbright Scholar, a Guggenheim Fellow, a Senior Fulbright Fellow at the University of London and a Senior Fellow of the National Endowment for the Humanities and is Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

I read “Henry VIII The Mask of Royalty†early in my college years — it’s the best bio of him that I’ve ever read. I was thrilled to stumble on a new book by Lacey Baldwin Smith, written when he was 89, in 2013! This essay on Anne Boleyn is another great book — in it, Smith goes thru four of the “big bios†of Anne Boleyn (two of which I had already read). Fascinating reading about this oh-so-controversial woman, and also about the weaknesses of the historical methods used by Eric Ives and Alison Weir in their books about her. Highly recommend!
Very dry reading. I had a problem just staying focused on this one. I couldn’t recommend it for pleasure reading.
This was a very good book on Anne Boleyn. I read Dennys Book that was one side and totally Wrong! She had right things but! Henry having Syphilis was totally wring! He Had 0 VD if any kind. His Drs kept a medical journal in The British Historical library in Britain & no Mercury was ever used on Henry which they used for Gonorhea or Syphilis. Neither used. And Lacys book never mentions VD. Its a better book than Denny's
Lacey Baldwin Smith did not uncover a lot of new ground, but his book was well-researched and well-written. t If you have a strong Tudor focus in your reading, this book would be a good addition to your library.

If anyone knows his subject it is Professor Lacey Baldwin Smith. Not only does he have to his credit sixty years of 'independent research', he is an eloquent and substantial writer, considered one of the foremost Tudor historians. The shadowiness of Ann's story, the allegations of original history and subsequent history, the contradictions, assumptions and agendas of historians, and the fictive breadth of this famously ambiguous woman is indeed a fascinating and unusual perspective. Baldwin Smith sifts through what is known and what is unknown. In the realm of what is known, he depicts Anne as a woman of her time, class and society. This is not a book about brand new evidence, as if history were a crime novel. The point is: there isn't evidence. The point is the real woman is buried in missing documents, mystery and conjecture. Baldwin Smith makes his points compellingly. This is an excellent book.
