If you are looking to use MIDI with Logic Pro or Logic Express, this book will be extremely helpful. Almost all of the meaty, in-depth sections are centered around software instrument manipulation, significant in-depth information about MIDI "sends" and the like. For this type of purpose, the book is pretty good.If you're interested in dealing with "real" instruments (piped-in guitars, microphone-based sound, and other analog inputs), the book is very thin.The book is highly focused on Pro (as the title indicates). If you're using Express, you'll have to be selective about what you read and choose to "try out."I did learn quite a bit about Logic Pro from this book. Although the instructions were sometimes laborious and esoteric, I did get a better handle on using the UI artifacts in Logic.That said, remember that although Logic Pro is an industry standard and is one of the leading recording software packages - it is not for the faint of heart or the computer-phobic. Logic Pro is to GarageBand (for example) as Photoshop is to MS Paint and Quark is to Notepad.
You would think that since the author is a composer, that this book would be helpful to composers. I am beginning a graduate film scoring program, and I bought this book to help teach myself Logic, but now I will just have to pay someone to teach it to me. Although there is a good bit of discussion of MIDI, the book doesn't really explain anything -- it gives you just enough information to see what kinds of things are possible, and that's it. Seriously, the manual that comes with Logic is WAY better (although that hasn't really fulfilled my needs either), and explains things in MUCH more depth than this book. Save your money.
For the price, this book may serve you well as a -reference- to using Logic. But if you need something to help you climb the learning curve, look elsewhere.There are lots of useful pointers and explorations of major features. They are illustrated with low-contrast grey screenshots. Furthermore, the book is *not* organized for newcomers. Briefly, it's a catalog, not a textbook.On the other hand you could spend a lot more and not do much better ... because the other books aren't much better.
